I was going through the pages of Times Magazine suddenly I was dumb struck to see the name of Aung San Suu Kyi. The name in itself arouses my curiosity to know more about her. So, what I read I want to share it with all of you, we still have such daring women in our country.
Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Rangoon( Burma). Her father, Aung San, founded the modern Burmese army and negotiated Burma's independence from the British Empire in 1947; he was assassinated by his rivals in the same year. She grew up with her mother and two brothers.She was educated in Methodist English High School, Burma where she learned languages. . A student of convent of Jesus and Mary school, Delhi and graduate of Lady Shri Ram College with the degree in politics. She continued her study and went to St Hugh's College, Oxford, obtaining a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1969.
She was appointed as Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960. She was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990, and the Nobel Peace Prize the year after. She has won a number of prizes from Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace. Aung San Suu Kyi has been placed under house arrest for 15 years on numerous occasions.During these periods, she had been prevented from meeting her party supporters and international visitors.
